I do like the hints that psql gives you when you run a query and mistype the column name though. Most of the time I find that feature quite annoying actually. I do not find things like autocomplete to be terribly helpful. Again, especially when you are constructing relatively large queries, losing that history, or not being able to find the exact query you ran yesterday afternoon is a p.i.a. psql has a query history, but it is hard to search, and if you accidentally break your session (instead of exiting cleanly), you can wipe out your history. This is much less convenient than a GUI editor. I usually have to edit a query like that in vim, and then run the query as a file ("psql -f myquery.sql"). This is more significant when you are running queries that are dozens or hundreds of lines long. You can grab the results from the query you ran three or four queries ago without having to re-run it.Įditing your last query is much easier in a point and click editor. Most of the GUI solutions stash your query results in a separate window and provide for easy export to Excel (Everyone who isn't a DBA or Developer will want the query results in Excel). As the databases get more complex (and varied), it is much easier to use a visual database browser than to have to constantly type in cryptic backslash-d commands and try to remember the results. You can sort of do this by opening multiple terminal windows each with a different psql session, but it is hard to keep track of them and it requires setting up a bunch of environment settings, which is hard to keep secure.
